Wait is almost over: Library Renovation Almost Complete by Johanna Foudy

After several years in the making, the PCCC library renovation is nearly complete.

Inspired by a visit to some other local college libraries in November 2021, the new learning

commons, located adjacent to the cafeteria, provides students with easy access to the courtyard and main library. Sponsored by the family of former Federal Judge Bill Martini, the area is meant to foster a collaborative, social environment for all students.

Many new features and advantages come with the new Learning Commons space. These new features not only allow for a more informal, yet interactive environment, but also a more

convenient one.

The furniture is movable, allowing students to move around and work/interact with one another. Students can still hang out and get their work done. Students can also converse at a normal volume, but the best part? Students can eat and drink within the learning commons.

As it is an extension to the library, the learning commons will have some books, but not too

many. In addition, some new offices will be introduced in the space, such as the Center for

Teaching and Learning.

Creating the learning commons is meant to distinguish quiet and informal library areas. When asked about this, Dr. Kineavy emphasized the importance of having a formal library environment, stating “…not everyone has a quiet place to study at home.” She wants the library to be a relaxed, productive environment with students’ best interests in mind.
