2025 STEM Summer Program: Sandy Hook Trip

A trip to Sandy Hook on July 31st, part of Week 4 of the STEM Explorers Academy, gave students the chance to experience New Jersey’s coastal environment, explore its sandy beaches, and learn about the area’s unique ecosystems.

Despite the hot sun, students enjoyed the day collecting shells, fishing in the bay, and relaxing by the water. It was both an educational and memorable summer experience. The impending storm cut the trip short but brought students even closer.

As the wind pushed the fog in and visibility dropped, tornado alerts sounded on everyone’s phones. Heavy rain and traffic jams stretched the journey back, making the return almost as memorable as the trip itself.

The STEM Explorers Academy Summer Program, which ran from July 7 to August 7, provided students with a comprehensive introduction to college life and academic resources. Through a combination of workshops, math classes, tutor/mentor support, and exposure to various departments—including the Wellness Center and Student Affairs—the program aimed to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in higher education. Mentors were actively involved from mid-July to the end of the month, helping students navigate the college experience and build connections.
