The room felt vast and widely open with various students entering the Paterson Room with 6 stands held in place. Pop music played overhead as students explored what each stand had to offer and contribute to Women’s History Month.

The Paterson Room even hosted delicious cookies and fruit punch drinks for every student who entered. Giggles and talks were heard among the students who were enjoying each stand and what they had to offer.

Women’s History Month coincides with International Women's Day on March 8th and celebrates the contributions of women in all history, culture, and society to better improve conditions and rights for other women.

On March 13, 2025, the Paterson Room held a Women’s History Month that celebrated women’s accomplishments. The event drew 100 students who enjoyed make-up, survival kits, bakery, and menstrual kits. The event lasted from 12 pm – 2 pm as there were tons of things that people could enjoy.

Tiffany Guerrero, Student Government President, held a stand that consisted of hair ties, claw clips, lotion, and more stuff to make your own survival kits. A fun activity for women to do and have, provided a contribution to the Women’s History Month event. “It’s a fun thing for students to do,” said Guerrero.

Survival kits are essential and hold supplies to have warmth, first-aid, signaling, and navigation for emergency situations. Hedy Lamarr first developed the wireless transmission technology which later developed into the GPS.

Shavita Perry, a makeup artist, held a makeup stand full of eyeliners, lipstick, concealer, brushes, and more to encourage women to feel beautiful and to enhance their beauty. ShavitaJs Beauty Notions is on Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat. “I’m here to enhance your natural beauty, not to hide it,” said Perry.

Makeup became very popular during the 1920s as Hollywood Movie Stars such as Clara Bow, Joan Crawford, and Greta Garbo encouraged women to embrace makeup to be respectable and boost confidence.

Makeup essentials for beginners include primer, foundation, eyeliner, mascara, eyebrow gel, eyeshadow, and a few more to enhance and gain confidence in feeling more beautiful.

Andrea Piearro, Bakery for Celestional Momenty, held a stand that offered women premium desserts such as alfajores cookies made with high-quality wheat flour, pure butter, and powdered sugar for a limited time to display Peruvian culture and experience.

Alfajores being a popular South American dessert is traced back from Arabic and then brought to Peru by Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century. Alfajores are a beloved treat in Peru as a snack, dessert, or part of a special occasion.

More Peruvian desserts to look out for are Suspiro de Limeña, Pionono, Lucuma Ice Cream, Mazamorra Morada, Doña Pepa’s Turrón, Ranfañote, King Kong, Humitas Dulces, Tres Leches, Panettone, and many other desserts to enjoy its rich flavor.

Shannon De La Cruc, Representee for the Multi-Cultural Wellness Resource Center, held a stand with various color menstrual packs that were given out to female students to help with their periods. “Wellness Center is bridging the gap for students who go through menstrual cycles so that they can feel hygienic and confident to walk in the hallways,” said De La Cruc.

To further help with women’s menstrual cycles and their periods, providing food they like for cravings, giving them heating pads, treating it as normal as periods are normal and natural, being a good listener during their venting, and never taking it personally are helpful to those who menstruate.

La Cruc also offered any students to check Single Stop that PCCC has partnered up with to see if any students are eligible for 20 federal and state benefits to navigate mazes of finding available support, community care, and local community resources via QR code.

Women’s History Month is all about celebrating each woman individually as they are human beings. Women’s History Month first started in 1978 as a local celebration in Santa Rose, California which was called at first Women’s History Week.

Women’s History Month shouldn’t be neglected or undervalued as women have done many things in history. Women have invented Monopoly (Lizzie Magie), Birth Control Pills (Katharine McCormick), Single Flares (Martha Coston), and tons more!

Many women go through life with struggles, fear, or downsides, but women must always remember,

Life is about finding yourself, embracing your strengths and weaknesses, and being true to who you are.” - Oprah Winfrey
