A Comment on Apalachee High School by Jadelyn Villa

As we mourn for the four lives lost within the last few weeks in the Apalachee High School shooting, I can't help but feel unbridled anger at how this country has failed its children.

Amendment Two has been subject to political discourse for decades-- and yet it is something Americans can never seem to agree upon. It is heartbreaking that mass shootings still occur in a nation that prides itself on its right to bear arms for protection when the amendment itself is based on an outdated principle. If this country has such an honorable (and highly funded) police force, why do civilians need guns, let alone semi-automatic assault rifles? And why are they so easy to acquire in the first place?

How is America consistently raising troubled white men who feel the only way out is through homicidal violence?

Why are school shootings accepted as a "fact of life," according to JD Vance?

An unshakable fear has been instilled into this generation, one that threatens the very place where we are meant to learn and feel safe.

It was their first day of school, and this system has robbed them of their perception of education forever.

When will my mother be able to send her daughters to school without fear of them not returning home?

When will the kids of America forget active shooter drills? Memorial assemblies? Bulletproof backpacks? The best classroom object to use as a weapon? The last "I love you" text to their parents?

When will they love our children more than they love their guns?
