Retro Movie Reviews Monster 2003

By Angel Camacho -
Monster is filled with an immaculate performance and emotions by the incredibly talented Charlize Theron. Charlize Theron portrays the most infamous female serial killer Aileen Wuornos. This film tracks Wuornos personal life and criminal life and how she got to that exact place. Theron shows her dedication to her character as she transformed herself into the role of Wuornos by gaining weight and shaving her eyebrows to look exactly like Wuornos and she certainly didn’t disappoint because in a way she was truly believable as Wuornos. Theron winning the Academy Award and Golden Globe was certainly no fluke victory. While the other nominees that included Diane Keaton and Naomi Watts acted well in their respective films, none of them could compare to Theron’s great acting. Monster is arguably Theron’s highlight of her career and her performance makes fans feel sorry for the way Wuornos was treated - that’s true acting right there and Theron’s performance can make you really emotional. However, Christina Ricci’s portrayal as Selby Wall wasn’t believable. Ricci is a very talented actress and she showed it in previous films before Monster but her performance was not as good as it could have been due to her lack of emotion throughout the film. Overall this is a good film and Theron truly deserved every accolade that she have received. My overall rating is 8.5/10.
