Evolving with Technology: The Digital Footprint

By Emely Guerrero

Technology is all around us. From the pencils we grip to the screens we watch shows on.

Technology is constantly evolving. New inventions are made every single day. Iphones are released back to back. You buy the latest one, and then all of a sudden, a new model is coming out two months later. We have become dependent on technology. It is the way we get things done quickly and effectively. Is too much of it bad for us?

Too much of the internet can negatively impact our way of thinking. Like memory impairment or lack of concentration. But it has also positively impacted us. Despite its negative effects, we gain more than we lose from the internet.

All of us have access to information all the time. If we’re stuck on a math problem, Google can help. If we’re completely lost, it's okay because we have Google Maps. Whatever it is we need help with we can look up. It allows us to learn new things and provides us with insight on what we don’t know. It is like having a virtual assistant that is fast and always right. Anywhere you are, you can search something, and you’ll get dozens of links with information on the subject. It allows us to have information at our fingertips.

We stay connected through the internet. Social media is a way we can connect with people from all over the world. Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat are all platforms where you can share posts with your followers. It’s a great way to stay in touch with your family that you don’t see as often. Some of my family lives in Dominican Republic and we keep in touch through social media. It's also a way of meeting new people. Some people have met their husbands and best friends through these apps.

The internet has provided us with our own virtual world where we can keep up with people from all over the globe.

The internet has also given many people job opportunities. People that can’t physically go to work can work online. There are a lot of different ways to make money online. Youtube for example, has become a huge way to make money. Youtubers post videos online and once they gain a following, they start to profit off their videos. People can also start their own businesses online. Some businesses do even better online because they can promote it better. If people see a celebrity post about a place then more people are going to find out about the place, and eventually start going.

Even though it can have some negative effects it has more positive. Concentration is important, but we are in a time where the way we learn is different. We learn and think differently than people did in the past. Technology is going to keep evolving and we are going to keep evolving with it as well. Our current crisis is a reminder of how technology has become a tool for forward thinking.
